4540 Center Boulevard, formerly known as East Coast 1, is part of a complex of seven buildings that lie at the north end of Hunter's Point on the former Pepsi Cola bottling plant site. They have transformed this Long Island City location from a post-industrial, contaminated waterfront to a vibrant and walkable neighborhood.
Prominently sited like the prow of a ship overlooking Manhattan and the East River, the site work encompasses two terraces flanking an upper tower. One is a graphically legible extensive green roof surrounding the elevator bulkhead. The occupiable terrace uses minimal and nautically-inspired materials to allow the dramatic water vista to dominate the experience. Adjacent private units are screened with lush plantings, and domestic hardwood acoustical panels provide a sound screen to the mechanical equipment.
The bold graphic legibility of the terraces is pleasing to visitors and upper floor residents alike.
