MNLA collaborated with Grimshaw Architects to transform Fordham Plaza into a vibrant transit hub and destination civic space in the heart of the Bronx. Critical objectives for this 2.3 acre site are improving safety, enhancing circulation, and providing new retail and event programming opportunities. Sustainable strategies guide the plaza’s transformation with the incorporation of bio-retention swales to reduce stormwater run-off, enhanced planting to create a lush and inviting spaces, and pavement chosen for its ability to reduce the heat island effect. In spite of the challenges of the site which include extensive Metro North rail lines below the plaza and servicing requirements to adjacent buildings, the design uses landscape and hardscape effectively to create spaces for seasonal markets, performances and daily commuters and residents.
