The Oval is a four-acre open space situated at the center of the Stuyvesant Town apartment complex. Home to 22,000 residents since 1949, the Oval is the social heart of this vibrant community. As part of a comprehensive redesign of Stuyvesant Town’s open space amenities, MNLA's design restores the Oval as its centerpiece. The lawn hosts special events, outdoor concerts, and an annual fair, and also serves the impromptu recreation needs of the complex's diverse population.

The plaza and its fountain are reconstructed with new granite pavers and water jets that display an effect commensurate with the scale of the Oval. Perimeter beds are stripped of their monocultural plantings and replaced with lush perennials and shrubs under the dappled shade of canopy trees. Realigned paths of compacted stone dust invite people to stroll and sit among the multi-seasonal landscape.
